We have built an instructional design support system called “FIMA-Light” which uncovers teacher’s intentions from his/her lesson plan and automatically visualizes them as goal decomposition trees. A decomposition tree expresses the ways of achieving a learner’s state change that should be realized in a whole lesson in the form of a tree structure. We have made use of FIMA-Light so that incumbent teachers themselves can improve their lessons. In this paper, we report on a practical use of goal-decomposition trees produced by FIMA-Light to improve trainee teachers’ skills in designing instructions before teaching practices in the teacher education program, and we discuss its effectiveness.
